About the Artist

Shira Mushkin is an American Israeli, multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Israel. She was born in New Jersey, U.S.A. in 1963, and moved to Tel Aviv, Israel in 1982. Working primarily in photography as well as mixed media, installation, and video, she has exhibited in galleries and art and photo festivals in Israel and abroad.

Mushkin is a graduate (1986) of Camera Obscura School of Art in Tel Aviv, with a B.Ed in Art (2004) from Kaye Academic College of Education, and earned a M.A. in Art History and Visual Culture-Curating (2011) from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in Beer Sheva.

In 2022, Mushkin received an Honorable Mention in the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards 17th Pollux Awards in the Culture and Daily Life Series category, as well as Honorable Mention in 2021 in the 16th Pollux Awards in the Cityscapes Series category. In 2021, she won the 17th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers in the Cell Phone Through Digital Manipulation category. In 2020, Mushkin won the 15th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers in the Digital Manipulation & Collage Through Landscapes and Seascapes category, and received Honorable Mention in the IPA-International Photography Awards 2020, in the Fine Art-Collage category.

Mushkin’s art seeks to capture the beauty and meaning found in everyday objects, scenes, and events, at home and on her travels. Her studio practice explores ideas about domesticity, gender, identity, and memory. She examines the way in which a mundane moment is elevated and recorded, prodding the memory of a past occurrence, as well as looking at the world through her perspective of life as an ephemeral existence, leading her to value life, and to preserve the memories of daily experiences.

Mushkin currently lives and works in Meitar, Israel.
